Our Growing Domes

Handcrafted in the Highlands for year-round growing — beautifully.

Highland Domes are among the most insulated, storm-resilient growing structures available today. Each one is handcrafted from locally sourced Douglas Fir, treated with UV-resistant natural oil for long life and minimal maintenance.

We use triple-wall polycarbonate cladding — made from the same material as bulletproof glass — offering the insulation value of double glazing, a long lifespan (35+ years in many cases), and full recyclability at the end of its life.

50–300% More Insulation

Unlike most storm-proof structures, our domes dramatically outperform on heat retention.

Full Head-Height

Full head-height space all the way around — maximising usable growing and living space.

Pollinator Ventilation

A roof window (manual or auto-venting) allows pollinators to visit and escape freely.

Circular Design

Flowing, circular design with no sharp corners, maximising growing space and airflow.

Inside, a Grower's Dream

  • High walls for climbing crops like tomatoes and cucumbers
  • Deep raised beds for chillies, courgettes, aubergines and salads
  • A presence that feels like a sculptural sanctuary rather than a shed
Inside a Highland Domes geodesic greenhouse - raised beds with tomatoes, cucumbers and climbing crops

Every Dome Includes

  • A raised perimeter base wall (30cm minimum) lined for protection
  • Built-in raised beds
  • Delivery + assembly included within 50 miles of Strathpeffer
  • A 3-year structural warranty

Our domes don't just grow food — they grow joy, resilience, and regeneration.

Our Story

This started in a garden on a slope during lockdown.

We just wanted to grow tomatoes, chillies and cucumbers. The bank in our back garden wouldn't take a polytunnel, and the polythene structures I'd worked with before didn't feel right.

Back in 2015, I co-founded Hempen, the UK's first organic hemp co-op. At a sister project, I'd seen domes being used for living in — and I knew instantly: domes are the strongest, most efficient way to enclose space. One day, I told myself, I'd build something meaningful with them.

During lockdown, I tried propping up a makeshift wall to support a polytunnel — before a neighbour gently pointed out it would all just slide downhill. That failure lit the spark.

With a good friend, we built the first prototype dome. We grew huge crops of tomatoes — but it was clear we needed more insulation and longevity. That's when I discovered triple-wall polycarbonate: light, double-layered, near-unbreakable, and able to last decades. Perfect.

That one dome grew into a vision.

Today, Highland Domes have won three innovation awards and supported many families, growers, and smallholders across the Highlands and Islands to become more food sovereign, resilient, and connected to the land.

We're not just building domes — we're building futures. Circular, regenerative, and deeply rooted.

What Our Customers Say

Firstly, I just wish we had discovered this a few years ago. Given where we live, we need something that will cope with the high winds. It is very sturdy and well-constructed. The results of the growth and production of the plants are amazing! It is giving us an extra outlook on life and both feel very positive as a result. The finished product is amazing. There is nothing more satisfying than eating your own produce. It has encouraged us to do more gardening so it is good for our mental wellbeing. The interaction with you has been great. A worthwhile investment in our eyes.

— Jo Finn, near Cromarty

There are so many things that I like about Highland Domes. Firstly Stefan Quarry is a good person to do business with. Then there's the design of the domes that gives amazing head height for growing climbers as well as looking cool in the garden. A Highland Dome is more like a garden sculpture than a greenhouse. In the Highlands it's the temperature that prevents all year growing. The unique triple wall polycarbonate really extends the growing season. Lastly there's the peace of mind that comes from knowing that the dome is highly storm resistant.

— Phil Armshaw, Surrey

Highly recommend a Highland Dome — we're loving harvesting salad leaves and tomatoes from our one just now! Living in a very exposed site on the west Highland coast, it's exactly what we need for growing our own produce. Stefan is a joy to deal with — thoughtful, considerate and passionate about what he does.

— Jennifer, near Gairloch

We think it's awesome!

Frequently Asked Questions

Triple-wall polycarbonate is around 300% more insulated than single-pane glass, helping your dome retain heat through the colder months. It's also safer and more storm-resilient than glass — we've heard several stories of glass greenhouses exploding in storms! Polycarbonate is smash-proof and recyclable, with some panels reportedly lasting over 35 years. For those who'd love a clear view out, we offer 6mm clear polycarbonate triangle windows as an upgrade — just let us know.

So many. Geodesic domes use triangles (the strongest 2D shape) to form a sphere (the strongest 3D shape). That makes them incredibly storm-resistant and structurally efficient. They're also deeply practical:

  • Full head height all the way around
  • Superb airflow and vertical growing space
  • A central roof window that vents passively and allows pollinators to escape
  • A low surface area-to-volume ratio, which reduces heat loss

They feel like growing inside a temple, not a tunnel.

Yes, we do. We can fit clear 6mm polycarbonate triangle windows into the dome's layout. These cost £395 per large storm-resilient panel, and many customers find that just one or two is enough to frame a lovely garden view. Just keep in mind that the clear panels have lower insulation value than the standard triple-wall cladding, so we recommend combining both.

The best setup is a gravel trench around where the perimeter base wall of your dome will sit. The site should be level and free of weeds, especially woody or invasive ones. We're happy to offer specific advice depending on your location — just ask.

Yes. Our domes have withstood many named storms across the length and breadth of the Highlands, since 2023, in some of the most exposed windy coastal positions. The geodesic shape is incredibly strong, and excellent local timber and stainless steel screws ensure longevity and resilience. We use the highest grade tape available with every dome, the same used on helicopters and airplanes, which gets applied to all external joints. The triple-wall polycarbonate we use is near unbreakable.

In most cases, no — our growing domes are considered permitted development for private gardens in Scotland and do not require full planning permission, as long as they meet certain criteria (including size and placement). That said, planning regulations vary by council and location, so we always recommend you check with your local planning authority — especially if you live in a conservation area, national park, or near a listed building. If you'd like help understanding what's required in your area, we're happy to advise.

We include delivery and assembly in the price within 50 miles of Evanton. Further afield, we can offer guided builds or provide assembly instructions if you wish to self-build. However, most customers choose for us to build the dome as it ensures the best finish and longevity.

With proper care, our domes can last decades. The triple-wall polycarbonate cladding is UV-protected and can last 35+ years. The Douglas Fir frame, treated with a natural oil, will grey naturally but maintain its integrity. If you want your dome to look as good as new, you can reapply oil every 2–3 years.

The triple-wall polycarbonate provides excellent insulation (U-value the same as double glazing), making it easier to maintain a stable temperature inside. In winter, you can add thermal mass (like water barrels) or even a small heater. In summer, the roof vent and door provide effective ventilation, or you can opt for automatic vents for optimal temperature control.

Absolutely. While many customers use their domes as greenhouses, others use them as yoga or meditation spaces, garden offices, saunas, or outdoor classrooms. We love hearing the creative ways our domes are used.

Yes. We can tailor elements of your dome to suit your needs, including adding extra windows, custom doors, different base wall heights, or even creating bespoke multi-purpose spaces. We also offer consultation for larger or commercial structures.
